Cross at your own risk, but at least tickets soon won’t be involved.
In New York City, jaywalking, or crossing a street outside crosswalk and against traffic regulations, has been an offense that could lead to fines — though they weren’t common. But as of April 17, the Department of Transportation held a hearing to make the DOT’s rules match the City Council’s vote to decriminalize jaywalking back in October.
For city residents and tourists, the city is now one step closer to formally allowing jaywalking.
